Although new to Carlin Edwards Brown, Steve Grobbel brings 29 years of law firm experience to the firm’s liquor licensing practice. For almost three decades, Steve has litigated civil, criminal, and administrative matters in state and federal courts, plus various Michigan Administrative tribunals, on behalf of a wide range of individuals, family businesses, large corporations and other sophisticated clients. His civil practice included a broad range of business-related matters, from collection and landlord-tenant cases to complex commercial litigation.

Steve has also handled a variety of criminal cases from both the prosecution and defense perspectives. For the last three years, Steve was Assistant City Attorney for the City of Harper Woods, responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor and ordinance violations. Prior to that, he spent 20-plus years as a criminal defense attorney, handling cases ranging from traffic matters and misdemeanors to serious felonies. Administratively, Steve’s practice has involved contested case hearings in front of various state governmental agencies, including the Driver Assessment and Appeal Division, Workers’ Disability Agency, and medical licensing boards.

Now, Steve’s practice will focus on liquor licensing issues, with an emphasis on representation of liquor license holders in violation hearings before the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. He is well-qualified to negotiate appropriate resolutions with the Attorney General’s Office when necessary, and to interact with the MLCC Hearing Commissioners as needed to achieve the best result possible applying Michigan’s complex Liquor Control Act.

Steve is currently the Treasurer of the Catholic Lawyers Society. Steve, his wife Kathleen, and their two daughters Keira and Taryn reside in Royal Oak, Michigan.
